Ten Directions
'Ten Directions' is a term from Eastern philosophy. It means 'in all directions, in all space.' These are the eight directions of the compass (east, south-east, south, south-west, west, north-west, north, north-east) plus the Nadir (below) and the Zenit (above). Often, the 'Ten Directions' are paired with the three times (past, present, future) to represent every place (10 Directions) and every time (3 Times).
“In every time and in every place, a sound exists that awakens and echoes in a specific emotional state,” says Roberto Cacciapaglia. “It is a call heard by those who have always been looking for it. When I play or compose, I take refuge within myself and send the sound into the Ten Directions of Space. I send my thoughts both inward, towards the presence inside me, and outward, towards discovery and meeting. The union of these two states awakens emotion, a subtle matter that can be felt by those who listen on the same frequency.
The thought starts from silence. Then, note after note, it begins its journey through the air like an arrow in space. Sound moves without obstacles into the ten directions. It enters into resonance through the invisible world of vibrations. It travels from space to the inside of us. It reaches the ear and makes all our other senses vibrate. It touches our deepest self and fills us. It meets and connects with something that is already there, welcomed as if it had always been expected.
The sound breaks free, radiates, and expands everywhere. On its return journey, it creates unexpected connections and invisible bridges. It is a space that touches and charms us because we recognize it, but at the same time, it surprises and moves us. Like a light, it illuminates hidden areas, travels through the mind and the heart, and reaches the depths of each of us. Those who listen and those who play share a living, sensitive state: a deep union of sound and spirit. This is Music, far from fiction and noise, living forever and everywhere in the ten directions.”
