Days of Experience

Composed during the lockdown period in Italy, the track has been recorded on a D270 Steinway & Sons grand piano by Pino ‘Pinaxa' Pischetola at the Griffa Studios with an innovative recording technique that combines traditional microphone placement with the use of a binaural microphone. This recording technique attempts to capture the three-dimensional response of a human listener to a sound source, thereby giving the listener the acoustic perception of 'being there' in the original recording environment.

"We will remember them as the days of experience, the time when everything stopped, suddenly, and from the noise of the restless and relentless sea of our daily activities we all plunged into silence, into the void,” says Roberto Cacciapaglia. “Many of us were afraid, and charged these moments with new anxiety, losing this opportunty to rediscover the infinite capacities within each of us. We could not and were not able to see, but then: Stop, Halt! A sudden brake, so as not to crash, was inevitable. Everything became calm, apparently calm for those who continued to need the noise, the roar, the usual chaos, but for those who managed to use this moment of isolation, of separation, new horizons opened up.

Each in their own home, we were like a great archipelago, an island in a multitude of millions of islands, separate but still connected by our deep roots, we rediscovered the indissoluble union that binds us. Emerging anew from these waters was our narrative, our culture, our ancestors. How they had suffered to give us this inheritance, to let us get to here; maybe for the first time we could put ourselves in their shoes; and now was it our turn? Yes, that’s just how it is.

Everything had come as a surprise and caught us unprepared. We, who with our lifestyle had attacked nature, her balance, her beauty. Our planet was now sick, could no longer breathe, her lungs at the limit, but we were all too busy ... And instead here was life, presenting again in its powerful nature, its boundless energy, the same energy as Tsunamis, earthquakes, melting icecaps, global warming. Once more she faced us with her strength, her violence, this time microscopic.

Our lives were in danger, our lungs, and many of us lost our loved ones. This awareness awakened us: we are all inexorably connected in a single destiny. These islands were starting to send each other messages, to communicate at a deeper level, starting to question ourselves, digging inside and out. So, slowly everything we had lost was coming back, and before our eyes resurfacing from the abyss was something belonging to us but that we had forgotten for too long. Appearing ever more visible and clear was one word… Love"
